I contend that the western world managed to move forward DESPITE the bible. It was the 17th and 18th century tradition of enlightenment and free-thought that enabled people to put the primitive and barbaric bronze age fables behind them and allow the institutions of slavery and misogynism to be fought against.

Keep rationalizing your primitive and barbaric book, but I also see that you also tend to ignore many of the things it demands of you...Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12565621013251370015noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8040205359373904435.post-70130586227132247332012-03-02T21:00:08.927-05:002012-03-02T21:00:08.927-05:00Secondly, re: so-called 'slavery'

Famous philosophers (Epictetus), teachers, grammarians, administrators (M.A. Felix, the procurator who was Paul's judge in Acts 23:24-24:27) artists, physicians and writers were all a part of this practice. These slaves and former slaves formed a broad band of intellectuals in the 1st century. Such slaves did not have to wait until manumission before they were capable of establishing friendships with their owners and other free persons as human beings.

For many, self-sale into slavery with anticipaton of manumission provided the most direct means to be integrated into Greek and Roman society. As such, in stark contrast to New World Slavery in the 17-19th centuries, Greo-Roman slavery functioned as a process rather than a permanent condition."
LinkJ Curtishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12746127431922685446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8040205359373904435.post-52272021474724113192012-03-02T20:56:58.995-05:002012-03-02T20:56:58.995-05:00This is the most closed minded and supremely uninf...This is the most closed minded and supremely uninformed blog entry I have come across in quite some time. I congratulate you.

First, re: alleged sexism...

"Christianity has gotten a bad rap from people who have not done their homework," says retired Illinois College sociology professor Alvin J. Schmidt, author of the recent book "Under the Influence: How Christianity Transformed Civilization."

"In what countries have women lacked freedom?" he says. "Where Christianity is not present, especially in the Middle East. Were it not for Christianity, Gloria Steinem would still be walking about in a veil."

Christianity was considered radically pro-woman at the time of its founding, he says. "Christ was never quoted as saying anything demeaning or derogatory to women. Women in Greek days could hardly leave their homes. When her husband had guests over, she was not even allowed to sit in the same room. Their status was extremely low among the Romans, where the father of the family had the power of life and death, even over his wife.

"In [the Gospel of] John, Chapter Four, Jesus was asked what he was doing talking to a woman in public, as you only talked with prostitutes in public. When he taught Mary and Martha in Luke 10, that was a behavior you did not do with women. "Christianity also nullified polygamy, as Jesus made it clear a man has one wife. If a Greek man was walking about outside with a woman, that was his mistress, not his wife. Christianity also made it clear widows were to be taken care of."J Curtishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12746127431922685446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8040205359373904435.post-58937718650799770152012-02-28T20:06:15.636-05:002012-02-28T20:06:15.636-05:00Awesome Larian Awesome... may the logic bomb fall ...Awesome Larian Awesome... may the logic bomb fall where you have tossed it!

I follow the second description in that corrupt men wrote the bible to cull the masses til they achieved the level of brainwashing and belief system to keep their desires and opinions as the only viable way of life.Stevehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10407079002238300209noreply@blogger.com
